Rotary Club History

Hoboken Rotary is part of the larger foundation Rotary International. Rotary was established in Chicago in 1905, and it quickly grew throughout the US and to over 80 countries in less than 10 years. Rotary is credited as the world's first service organization, and it occupies the only seat at the United Nations that does not belong to a country. The seat is non-voting, but it recognizes the importance of the Rotary, with its international members and contacts once being fundamental to international communications.

Today, Rotary has over 1.2 million members in 200 countries worldwide. Hoboken Rotary was founded over 80 years ago, and it was started to further the goals of community service, international understanding, health, and literacy
around the world and especially in the local community. With over 45 current members, Hoboken Rotary is looking to grow even more.

Service above Self

The Rotary motto, "Service above Self", conveys the mission of Rotary.

Rotary lives this motto by identifying activities that focus in four major areas where the membership can share their time and talents: vocations, international, community and club service. Vocation service projects include programs such as career shadowing and mentoring students in our communities. International service projects include well building in Africa or the Rotary Gift of Life program. Community service projects focus on local events and activities that improve the neighborhoods we live in. Club service projects encompass all the areas of running and growing the club.

In all the things, we think, say or do, Rotarians strive to apply and live the four way test.

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Relationships and Resources

As a member, officer and active volunteer in Rotary, I've had the chance to develop relationships and enhance both leadership and even accounting skills in club and community service projects. Service above self can be easy and satisfying when you're doing it with a great bunch of interesting and talented people. This network has proven valuable in expanding resources to both clients and friends of the firm looking for services and solutions from legal services to real estate valuation assistance.

Visit Rotary's website, www.rotary.org/en/Pages/ridefault.aspx to learn more about Rotary and all the good things accomplished around the world and in our communities.

You'll meet great people and develop strong relationships too while enhancing your professional and personal life. And since its global, there's a club near you!
